Before we dig in…
A few things to note about passion in your calling:
God does not always call us to things that we are necessarily passionate about. Our calling is often challenging and scary. God calls us to meet needs that are beyond our ability, make an impact in unlikely environments, and trust Him every step of the way. That means that passion in our calling might be developed along the way.
On another note, Passion isn’t an essential ingredient in answering our calling but it is an important one (keep reading to see why). Like I mentioned above, passion can be developed through our calling. If you are convinced you’ve heard the voice of God but you’re seriously lacking passion don’t give up or second guess yourself!
Now that we’ve got that straight, let’s explore why passion in your calling is so important!
Unique position to make an impact
One of the biggest reasons passion in your calling is so important is because of the impact potential. You are far more likely to make a difference in a space that ignites your passion than you might be in a space of pure obedience.
Let’s settle one thing right here, right now: Your passions are not an accident. When you bring your passions into the spaces that God has called you to the potential to make an impact soars.
Think of a teacher or coach you had growing up. What sets your favorite teachers or coaches apart from your not so favorite ones? I’d venture to guess the common trait your favorite teachers and coaches possessed was passion.
Influential people in our lives that exhibit passion make an impact. You have the ability to be the person that impacts others for Christ with your passion!
Endurance when the going gets tough
Passion can be the thing that sustains you in difficult seasons. When the work gets hard, when things look uncertain, your passion is the drive that keeps you going.
It’s so much easier to give up on tasks and assignments that are void of passion. It’s much harder to neglect the things that set our souls on fire! Passion can be the lifeblood of your calling.
Consider your first job or two. Why did you end up leaving those jobs? Maybe the pay wasn’t great or the environment was crummy, but all in all, I imagine that first job did not spark your passion. It was easy to walk away from that job in the end because you envisioned greater opportunities ahead and dreamed about future opportunities that excited you.
It’s so much easier to put your hand to work that utilizes your passions and to keep working when difficulty arises. And I’ll let you in on a little secret: difficulties always arise in our calling.
A quick word on finding your passions
By this point, you might be wondering what all of this means if you aren’t sure what you are passionate about. Here are a few questions to help you discern what your passions might be:
What is something you could talk about endlessly?
What is an activity that leaves you feeling full?
What are you most excited about?
Take some time to consider the questions above. If you’re still stumped after some serious reflection I would encourage you to start serving. Find a space to plug in your gifts and talents. Notice how different serve opportunities make you feel. Did serving in that area make you feel more filled up, totally depleted, or somewhere in between? Pay special attention to the service opportunities that leave you feeling full and keep pursuing those avenues.
What now?
How amazing is it that God knows our passions? He knows what fires you up and stirs your soul. He also knows the potential impact your passion can create in the spaces He has called you to.
Don’t downplay or minimize your passions. The things you are passionate about are not an accident. Find ways to infuse them into your calling.
Your passions are also important anchors in trying and challenging seasons. Cling to your passions when things get tough and acknowledge how much harder it can be to talk in obedience where no passion exists.
If you’re still feeling fuzzy about what your passions are start exploring! Ask God to show you what he is passionate about, take some time to reflect on activities or topics that get you all fired up, and find service opportunities that use your gifts and talents.
