It can be a real challenge to remain consistent in your calling. At some point or another you’ll inevitably find yourself putting off, neglecting, or resisting your calling. Even though you are doing important kingdom work it’s normal to lose your motivation and enthusiasm from time to time. As challenging as staying consistent may be, it’s so important!
Staying consistent in your calling is an act of obedience to God and an indication to those you serve that you’re reliable. If you need some help staying consistent in your calling, keep reading to discover 8 simple tips that will make staying consistent in your calling feel like a breeze.
8 Tips for staying consistent in your calling
#1 Talk to God often
Clarity in your calling and current assignment will help you stay consistent. And clarity ultimately comes from your creator. Make conversation with God a regular part of your daily routine. Specifically ask God to clarify your path and instill motivation within you to show up consistently.
#2 Break big goals into smaller action steps
Setting goals is a great way to generate motivation and growth in your calling. As amazing as goals are, they won’t work for you if they are too big and lofty. Goals need to be broken down into realistic, doable steps. Boost consistency in your calling by taking some time each week to map out small action steps that will get you closer to your big goals.

#3 Get organized
Getting organized probably isn’t the first thing you think about when it comes to staying consistent but it’s a total game changer. The more organized you are when it comes to doing what you’ve been called to do, the easier it will be to show up on days when you’re just not feeling it.
Take some time to organize your physical working space if you have one, and your systems. Do you have a system for meetings and appointments? Recurring tasks? Closing old projects and starting new ones? Give yourself at least a day to pause the important kingdom work you’re doing and get organized!
#4 Remember your WHY (and your WHO)
When you feel unmotivated or uncertain, remember your WHY. Your WHY is the reason you do what you’ve been called to do. Your WHY might be obedience to God, a sense of purpose, the impact your calling has on others, or all the above. Take a moment to reflect on your WHY.
Your WHO is similar to your why but it’s far more personal. Your WHO are the people that are impacted by your consistency. On those days when you don’t feel motivated or energized, remember your WHO.
#5 Leverage your most productive hours
A big key to consistency is leveraging your most productive hours. It won’t be easy to stay consistent in your calling if you’re operating within someone else’s window of productivity. You can’t change the hours of your 9-5 or procrastinate until midnight everyday but you can create a schedule that works for you. As much as possible, schedule your most important tasks during your most productive hours of the day.
Pro tip: If you walk out your calling in the 9-5 setting but the hours between 9-5 aren’t necessarily your most productive there are a few things you can do. First, identify your most productive hours between 9 AM and 5 PM. While those aren’t your most productive hours in a 24 hour period there are definitely windows of time within those hours that you are likely more productive than the rest. Second, ask your employer about a flexible schedule. You never know unless you ask how willing your employer might be to accommodate alternate work hours, especially if they see a higher caliber of work from you as a result.
#6 Define a win
Staying consistent in your calling feels especially daunting when you aren’t really sure what you’re working toward. Defining a win can help you anchor your efforts and energy to a tangible outcome. Having a tangible outcome to work toward, or in other words, clearly defining your win will ignite motivation and renewed enthusiasm in you.
Consider what would make your current efforts a win. With a win in mind I guarantee you’ll find it easier to take consistent action in your calling.
#7 Give yourself grace
It’s impossible to keep up consistency when you’re feeling burned out. A major key to staying consistent in your calling is grace, grace, and more grace. You don’t have to earn rest or breaks. Regularly resting throughout the day and week will help you recharge so you can stay consistent.
Schedule rest into your days and weeks without guilt. Your ability to stay consistent in your calling will skyrocket when you do.
#8 Build community
Last but not least, if you’re struggling to stay consistent in your calling, surround yourself with quality community. The right community for you, friends – mentors, coaches, accountability partners – can make all the difference when it comes to consistently doing what you’ve been called to do. When your own source of motivation and enthusiasm for your calling has run dry your community can help replenish your desire to show up and serve.
Pause to identify the community in your life. Keep these people in mind and reach out to them when you’re feeling unmotivated and unenthusaistic about your calling. Ask for their advice, encouragement, and help.
