I didn’t choose clarity and confidence as my coaching specialties on a whim. In fact, I considered just choosing one or the other. I landed on both clarity and confidence because I believe it’s nearly impossible to have one without the other.
Turns out, it’s hard to sustain confidence without clarity and vice versa. Take it from someone who used to struggle with both.
I remember feeling called to be a coach. I was passionate and eager to get started but my lack of vision and overload of doubts almost stopped me entirely from moving forward. I’m glad to report that some clarifying work and confidence boosting activities finally gave me the courage I needed to take the plunge.
I have a hunch that confidence and clarity are the missing ingredients that you need to step into your calling too! Keep reading to find out what is so essential about my two favorite C words.
Clarity
Trying to move forward in life without clarity is like trying to sprint through a forest covered in fog. You can imagine how successful that endeavor would be…
You might not live in a forest but I bet life can feel pretty foggy at times. That fog is thanks to a lack of clarity. Without clarity, it’s hard to prepare for what comes next, make important decisions, and move forward.
Before we begin a new project, leave a job, get engaged or navigate just about any other transition or change in life it’s imperative that we establish clarity. Pausing to consider what our motivations are, what the end goal is, and how we might succeed is all a part of the clarifying process.
Here are a few ways you can establish clarity:
- Regularly set aside time to be with the Lord. Pray, get in The Word, and wait for God’s direction.
- Define your values. Knowing what’s most important to you will help you make decisions. Read more about the importance of values and take a values assessment here: baileystonecoaching.com/values
- Take time to check-in. Are you meeting your goals? Are you beholden to a habit or routine that just isn’t working? How can you do more of what’s working for you?
- Create space for silence. Lack of clarity is often due to overstimulation. Turn off the TV, drive without the radio on, take those AirPods out, and call in reinforcements if you need a break from your kiddos.
Taking the time to establish clarity is incredibly important but I’ll be honest, clarity works best when it’s backed up by confidence.
Confidence
If clarity is peanut butter then confidence is jelly. In other words, you might find yourself totally clear on your next step yet struggling to make the next move. That’s where confidence comes in.
To borrow from my metaphor earlier, clarity lifts the fog from the forest but confidence gives us the courage to forge ahead. Confidence enables us to forge ahead on unmarked paths, keep going when we hear unfamiliar sounds, and keep going even when we can’t see our final destination.
Confidence boosting essentials:
- Find safe, supportive community. You might be able to sustain confidence by yourself short-term but in the long run, you’ll need other women in your corner that you can count on.
- Give yourself the time and space to be a beginner. Accidents are expected when just starting out. Allow plenty of margin for mistakes and missteps.
- Start with small courageous steps. Confidence doesn’t necessarily come from big leaps. Take small steps that require courage. Courageous steps are the building blocks of unshakable confidence.
Confidence isn’t something that is created overnight. Challenge yourself to take courageous steps that will eventually compound into confidence. Confidence built on a solid foundation of courage is the ultimate compliment to clarity.
