Discovering your values can help you lead a more purposed and impactful life. Whether you know it or not you have about 3 to 5 core values that influence just about everything you do! When you tap into your values you can establish priorities that are true to yourself, pour into your passions, and find healthy ways to motivate yourself.
Values Influence Your Priorities
Knowing your values can help you establish intentional priorities. When your values align with the things that are most important to you it’s easy to establish priorities. Setting priorities from a place that honors your values makes life a whole lot easier!
As a coach, I often ask my clients about their values. Suddenly the importance of the session’s subject is amplified and taking the next step seems so much more doable.
Allow your values to influence your priorities and watch the magic happen. Consider jotting down your values in a weekly planner, at the top of your to do list, or on a sticky note that you can stick to your computer screen.
Values Impact Your Passions
Discovering your values can also help you get clear about your passions.
Your passions aren’t an accident. And neither are your values. It’s important to identify how your values influence the things you are most passionate about. Passions are activities, topics, and causes that you love. You can work easily at your passion or talk about it endlessly. Pause for a moment and imagine how much of a difference you could make in the space where your passions and values collide!
It’s not uncommon to value things that we are passionate about. But passion and value don’t always impute priority. Take a tip from above and prioritize your passions!
Healthy Motivators
Even when our priorities are straight and our passions are aligned with our values it isn’t always easy to stay motivated.
Health is one of my core values. I love making nutritious meals and staying up to date on the latest health trends. I’ll confess that working out is an element of my health that I struggle with. On those days when I’d rather grab a chocolate bar and turn on the TV, I remind myself why I value health.
Maybe exercise isn’t an issue for you but you might struggle to do things that you are know are good for you. That’s where the importance of your values comes in. Drawing on your values can be a healthy and effective way to follow through on the things that erode your motivation.
Take a moment to consider how you can draw on your values in moments of lethargy and lack of discipline.
